Glossary: Location-based Services (LBS)

Location-based services are services which use the location data of a mobile terminal device to send a user information which is adapted to his current location, e.g. tips on restaurants nearby. The location data is detected via GPS, radio cell, WLAN or bluetooth. There is a difference between reactive services and proactive services. In the case of reactive services, the user himself needs to activate the service, e.g. by opening an app. With proactive services, it is enough to enter a specific location (e.g. a geo-fencing area) to automatically trigger the service.
